Juamho (Lake)
  • Juam Lake is deep and vast and is located at the border area of Boseong-gun. The Boseong River of Boseong, and Dongbuk Stream and Yongdeok Stream of Hwasun-gun run into the lake and create a beautiful landscape, which is different from the atmosphere of the sea.
  • The cold and clean water comes from deep in the valley of Mt. Jeam. The water provides drinking water to people of Boseong and agricultural water for the fields of Boseong and then follows through the Jeongja River and Boseong River and provides the source of drinking water in Juam Lake, then goes to the southern sea after passing the Seomjin River.
  • A large artificial lake was created in Boseong, Suncheon, and Hwasoon due to the Juam multipurpose dam, whose construction started on October 17, 1984 at the mountain which connects Daegwang-ri and Gusan-ri, Juam-myeon, Suncheon-si; operation started in April 1990.
  • The beautiful landscape of the lake can be seen in Yongam-ri, Deokchi-ri and Juksan-ri, Mundeok-myeon, Boseong-gun. In particular, a unique-shaped steel arch bridge can be seen on the border area of Boseong-gun, Suncheon-si and Hwasun-gun. Near the area, the water is deep and vast, as water from the Boseong River, Dongbok Stream, and Yongdeok Stream meet, and the joint area creates the most beautiful landscape. The area provides a different mood from the sea and, therefore, became a new tourist attraction for families and couples along with nearby tourist resources.
  • When the Seongjae Seo Jae-Phil Memorial Project is completed, the lake will attract people from cities who seek nature and a hometown feel as a new educational and cultural space, as well as historical resources along with the Baekmin Gallery which leads regionalization of cultural and artistic space, Daewon Temple which cherishes the tradition of a thousand years and the Jeollanam-do Dolmen Park which collects and restores pre-historic relics.

  • Songjae Seo Jae-Phil was born in 1866 in Ganae Village, Yongam-ri, Mundeok-myeon, Boseong-gun, his mother’s side, and raised there until he turned 7 years old. His scholarship and anti-Japanese spirit had been influenced by his mother’s side. He met Kim Ok-Gyun, Park Young-Hyo, and Seo Gwang-Beom when he studied in Seoul and was fascinated by a new culture after being inspired by Enlightenment Thought.
  • He led the Gapsin Revolution when he was 18, but it failed after three days of victory. He went to the U.S.A. and returned home as Korea’s first medical doctor. In 1896, he launched the first Korean newspaper, Donglip Sinmun, and raised people’s awareness. He also led an independence movement by organizing the Independence Association and building the Independence Gate. He therefore contributed significantly to the modernization of Korea by democratizing people through the People’s Joint Association. He had to leave the country due to political issues while leading the autonomous independence and democratization.
  • He supported the liberation of Korea at his own expense while away from home and worried over the faith of his country during the Korean War. He died in 1951 at the age of 85. The Korean government returned his remains and buried him in the national cemetery. The government also selected him as Korea’s cultural figure.
